Ruby’s Arctic Retreat

A poem for Ruby, who is going to Iceland to celebrate her 16th Birthday with my incredible friend Shannon and Shannon's girlfriend Natalie (Ruby's Mumma).

(Photo taken on a trip to Iceland in 2016)

In the winter realm of dancing lights,
Colours waltz through bewitching nights.
Celestial ballerinas pirouette through hues
Of arctic blues -
Projecting an aquamarine
Screen
Of brilliant beauty
Above Iceland.

Below Elsa’s spellbound land,
Lies a world of sapphire sand.
Hidden beneath an oceanic cloak
These crystals glitter gracefully,
Adorning the Nordic seas –
Home to the Humpback Whale.
A world more magical than the tale
Of Arendelle.

Whilst you gaze into the curious cosmos below,
Puffins prance above the sleeping snow –
Flapping ferociously to stay in the sky
And fly
Into the twirling lights -
Iceland’s majestic sights.

Found in this fictitious world
Of frozen fantasy,
You will discover Ariel’s Atlantica:
The Blue Lagoon -
Sparkling under the midnight moon.
Mermaids whirl within the
Warm waves of this wonder,
Whilst you ponder
Over this precious moment in time –
In a space so incredibly sublime.

In the icy of realm of Iceland,
As you celebrate turning sixteen,
Become a dazzling snow queen
Like those from tales
Who understand the songs of whales.
No, you are not Dory,
For you will create your own story.

Happy Birthday Ruby.
Now run free
On Iceland’s sapphire sand
With your family in hand.
